escape
sculptural installation and film, 2021

During lockdown, many women found themselves responsible for the bulk of domestic, childcare and homeschooling tasks. This was often in addition to or instead of their usual working roles. This 1950s housewife existence did not sit so well with women in 2020 and much was written about it in the media.

In this work a ladder has been made from the very materials that create the domestic trap – tea towels, sheets, broken jewelery, an elusive black sock, string, clothing scraps, dryer lint. Text from The Housewife’s Handbook (1953) is used also, highlighting the difference between what is shown and what is perhaps, felt.

The film explores the psychological impact of being trapped.
